‘JEPICO – BBA – ZEN EQUIP’ VENTURE

[Japan – USA – India cooperation]

Jepico Corp. (Japan), BBA Project Inc. (USA) and Zen Equip India Pvt. Ltd. (India) have come together to form a venture in order to utilize the demographical advantages available in India and serve the growing Transit Infrastructure sector which includes the railways as well as the mass rapid transit system.

INDIAN PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Economic liberalization of 1991 followed by Information Technology (IT) industry explosion has taken India to a new growth scenario. Backed by strong fundamentals and commendable growth in the past three to four years, the Indian Economy is poised to grow even further at an average of 8 to 10 % in the next 3 years.

However, India’s current transit infrastructure is out-dated and insufficient to support the expected annual GDP growth rates. Identifying transit infrastructure development as a critical enabler to the economy, the Government of India has already initiated a number of investment and policy initiatives such as the following among others:

  • In-principle approval to 100% Foreign Direct Investment in railways.
  • Transit infrastructure spend increased from USD 65 billion (1.5 per cent of GDP) in 2007 – 2012 period to USD 160 billion (2.3 per cent of GDP) in 2012 – 2017 period.
  • Numerous projects earmarked as “High Priority” which includes the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and introduction of Bullet Trains in India.
  • Indian government announced plans to urgently revamp the existing railway infrastructure modernise and upgrade the out-dated rolling stock, communication systems, stations and safety standard.
  • Every Tier 1 and Tier 2 city in the country to have Mass Rapid Transit System.

Based on the above, India, in the coming decade, will witness development surge not only in the conventional railway sector but also in the mass rapid transit sector.

As of now, the reported Indian Population is 1.28 billion. Because of rapid growth in economy and increase in disposable income, sale of vehicles has witnessed a massive surge especially among the rising middle and upper class population. However the infrastructure has not caught up with the rise in vehicles on the road. As a result, populated cities are very congested with ever increasing traffic issues. Thus there is a definite need of improving mass transit systems throughout the entire nation.

Today, there are numerous metro projects executed and proposed all over the country, each authorized by an individual Special Purpose Vehicle.

Upcoming projects in India listed in the link below:

Meanwhile, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCC) has been established and run by the Government of India and Ministry of Railways to undertake planning, development, mobilization of financial resources and construction, maintenance and operation of the DFCC

Zen Equip India Pvt. Ltd. (ZEI) was created to support these very clear changes and demands.

ZEI focuses and provides services in primarily the following areas:

IN INDIA

Similar to the ‘Buy America’ requirements in the U.S., most Indian government contracts require a technical transfer and domestic manufacturing of parts and trains (locomotives). ZEI is very familiar with these ‘Buy India’ requirements and could provide guidance to find qualified domestic supply and sources for the requested parts. ZEI could work as your agent or consultant to set up necessary meetings and follow up on action plans.

Recently, ZEI identified potential parts suppliers for the Mumbai-Delhi Western Corridor project which requires transfer of technology and building electric locomotives in India. The potential parts suppliers are both Indian Railways and RDSO approved or are newly discovered potential domestic manufacturers being prepared for the upcoming June 30, 2015 bid.

Besides the Western and Eastern Dedicated Corridor projects, the JICA funded Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project will also require technical transfer and build in India. ZEI is gearing up to support this project in the conceptual stage itself to fulfill the customers’ needs.

TO INDIA

Mass Rapid Transit System is still a new concept for the masses in India. The numerous transit authorities are still at the primitive stage of procuring qualified and technologically advanced parts. Utilizing its strong network in the transit industry, ZEI could act as your manufacturers’ representative / consultant to promote sale of your products to car builders, OEM parts suppliers and transit authorities in India.

Since 2010, ZEI has successfully participated in all major metro projects. The details are as follows:

PROJECT USER / AUTHORITY ROLLING STOCK MANUFACTURER NO. OF CARS
DELHI METRO RS 2 Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd BOMBARDIER 4
DELHI METRO RS 7 Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd BOMBARDIER 50

* Project In Progress.

Encouraged by the ‘Buy India’ concept, major rolling stock manufacturers today are considering either setting up manufacturing units in India or are transforming their Indian plant into an export center for foreign markets especially the ASEAN region. Considering the current upcoming Indian domestic transit market, this export center concept will surely add importance to OEM’s marketing plan in the rapidly growing Indian Transit market.

FROM INDIA

One of the strongest selling points of Indian products is the cost effectiveness. This will contribute towards realizing India as a global manufacturing hub that can offer quality products at affordable rates to compete with the Chinese made products.

Understanding international quality requirements, ZEI could find sources to provide high quality and low cost products to meet the critical parts and component requirements. ZEI has already identified a qualified Indian casting foundry and metal fabricator in order to export products with very competitive prices and high quality standards to U.S.A., Germany and Japan.

Therefore, ZEI invites enquiries for critical components and parts and would be pleased to offer prices for supplying these parts from India.
